Warm-season heat stress in moose (Alces alces)

چکیده
Understanding howmoose (Alces alces (L., 1758)) are affected by temperature is critical for determiningwhy populations have recently declined at the southern extent of their North American range.Warm-season heat-stress thresholds of 14 and 20 °C are commonly used to study moose, but the variable response of free-ranging moose to temperatures above these thresholds suggests thatmoosemay bemore tolerant to heat.We studied zoo-managed cow and bullmoose to identify factors that influence warm-season heat stress. We found clear behavioral and physiological responses to thermal conditions. Moose selected shade, indicating solar radiation affects heat stress. Temperature and wind influenced respiration rates. Heat-stress thresholds for moose occurred at 17 °C when bedded under calm conditions and 24 °C when bedded under wind, demonstrating that the onset of heat stress is sensitive to wind and incorporating wind velocity into analyses would improve investigations of heat stress. Moose showing symptoms of gastrointestinal illness selected wind at lower temperatures than healthy moose, suggesting the effects of climate change will be compounded for health-compromised moose. Determining why moose are declining at the southern extent of their range may require understanding how temperature interacts with wind, moose health, and other

Moose, Alces alces, Habitat Relative to Riparian Succession in the Boreal Forest, Susitna River, Alaska
We documented Moose, Alces alces, habitat characteristics relative to boreal forest succession in the Susitna River flood plain, Alaska. Early Shrub and Old Poplar (Populus balsamifera) Forest sites were most important to wintering Moose. Browse availability was the principal factor affecting winter habitat selection by Moose. Feltleaf Willow (Salix alaxensis) in Early Shrub was the principal ...
متن کاملBehavioural Responses to Thermal Conditions Affect Seasonal Mass Change in a Heat-Sensitive Northern Ungulate
BACKGROUND Empirical tests that link temperature-mediated changes in behaviour (activity and resource selection) to individual fitness or condition are currently lacking for endotherms yet may be critical to understanding the effect of climate change on population dynamics. Moose (Alces alces) are thought to suffer from heat stress in all seasons so provide a good biological model to test wheth...
متن کاملMobility of moose—comparing the effects of wolf predation risk, reproductive status, and seasonality
In a predator-prey system, prey species may adapt to the presence of predators with behavioral changes such as increased vigilance, shifting habitats, or changes in their mobility. In North America, moose (Alces alces) have shown behavioral adaptations to presence of predators, but such antipredator behavioral responses have not yet been found in Scandinavian moose in response to the recoloniza...
متن کاملReproductive characteristics in female Swedish moose (Alces alces), with emphasis on puberty, timing of oestrus, and mating
BACKGROUND The moose (Alces alces) is an intensively managed keystone species in Fennoscandia. Several aspects of reproduction in moose have not been fully elucidated, including puberty, timing of mating and oestrus, and the length of the oestrus period. These aspects are relevant for an adaptive management of moose with respect to harvest, population size, demography and environmental conditio...
متن کاملAnaplasma phagocytophilum infection in moose (Alces alces) in Norway.
Anaplasma phagocytophilum is a tick-borne bacterium that infects a wide range of animal species. The aim of our study was to investigate the prevalence of A. phagocytophilum in Norwegian moose Alces alces and to characterize the bacteria by sequencing of partial msp4 and 16S rRNA genes. Hunters collected spleen samples from 99 moose of different ages during 2013 and 2014 in two areas: Aust-Agde...
